Spiti is a Trans-Himalayan terrain bordering with Tibet at an average altitude of 4000 meters. Spiti Valley, through which the Spiti river flows, is a desert mountain valley located high in the Himalayan mountains in the north-eastern part of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
The name “Spiti” means “The Middle Land”, i.e. the land between Tibet and India. Spiti valley is home to some of the oldest monasteries in the Himalayan region like Tabo monastery, Dhankar monastery, Sherkhang monastery and Kye monastery, with strong hold of Buchen Lamas in Pin Valley. It possesses a distinctive Buddhist culture similar to that found in the nearby Tibet Autonomous Region and the Ladakh region of India. Spiti can be reached by crossing Rohtang La & Kunzum La from Manali from June to October.This route remain closed in winters due to heavy snowfall. It can also be reached via Kinnaur district from Shimla almost all time of the year. Kinnaur is the land of fairy tales and fantasies, has a spectacular terrain of lush green valley, orchards, vineyards, snow clad peaks and cold desert mountains. It is a border district of Spiti.
